At the traditional spring meeting in Halle (GER) on Saturday 21 May Betty Heidler set a new world record in her first appearance for the year, hurling the 4kg implement tantalisingly close to the 80m mark.
After breaking her own German record throwing 77.19 in her first round effort, the 27 year-old improved to 79.42m in her 3rd attempt. Her “worst” of six throws was 75.34m! She attributed her incredible improvement to a lot of technique training with her coach, Michael Deyhle, but she also reported feeling very relaxed during her throws because she had full confidence in her technique.
In the men’s discus Robert Harting (GER) made the best of the excellent conditions, throwing 68.99m during a series where the worst of his six valid attempts was 67.17m! Benn Harradine threw a fantastic 66.07m.
In the women’s discus, Li Yanfeng (CHN) (66.18m) and Nadine Müller (GER) (66.05m) posted impressive marks.
